IN COMMUNICATION

In this section you can get in touch with the Pompeo Mariani Archive © regarding historic and scientific research, academical needs or if you require the services of our experts for the authentication of works attributed to the artist. The authority of the Archives, both in terms of historiographical notations, and regarding authenticity assessment of the art works derives primarily from the considerable information resources that we have collected and materially preserved: documents, records and diaries signed by the painter, lists of commissions and catalogue photos, paintings and drawings directly linked to the painter and his inheritance, and more. Secondly, beyond the large body of historical documentation preserved by the Pompeo Mariani Archive ©, another essential aspect of our work is scientific investigation and cataloguing of the media collected. This careful research is curated by a group of experienced art history academics, renowned for their work in this field.

ARTWORKS AUTHENTICATION

Among the fundamental goals of the Pompeo Mariani Archive © is to collect documents and information of various kinds, even outside of the archive’s sources, in order to classify and preserve the collected works of Pompeo Mariani. The aim is to counteract dubious attributions that occur in the art market, and which have allowed certain other artists to profit unfairly by the Marian’s fame throughout the course of the 20th and even 21st centuries. This will become the basis of a new free service (excluding archive, shipping, return and insurance) of expertise offered to the collectors, art dealers, museums, public and private entities who hold the works of Pompeo Mariani and need to certify them. Oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and designs, letters, photos and various documents that give us insight into the life and work of Pompeo Mariani all fall under the prospective scope of this service. The Scientific Committee meets and assesses the validity of artefacts that will be submitted according to predefined criteria (see Annex 2), working with maximum transparency, adhering to the scientific approaches and appropriate ethical standards.

The documentation required for an initial analysis of the work goes through the following material to be sent via email: a digital photograph weighing at least 5 MB on the front and back of the work. All documentation relating to the history and provenance of the painting and information on the work (measurements, technique, support, date, signature and notes). With this material a research will be carried out at the Pompeo Mariani archive and subsequently the painting (without the frame) will be requested at our office. The Scientific Committee will meet for the occasion and examine the work that will be returned the same day.

The painting will be studied and analyzed on the basis of stylistic and temporal criteria that can be traced back to the original autographed catalog documents drawn up by the artist himself. Upon delivery of the work will be issued, in duplicate, the document of archiving with the indication of authenticity or non-authenticity. The payment of expenses for archiving is € 300.00 and will take place through a liberal donation to the Cultural Association for the protection, study, enhancement of the Archive and the Opera of Mosè Bianchi Pompeo Mariani Elisabetta Keller.
